Study Permit
Securing a student visa to pursue a post-secondary degree in Canada can be an excellent first step toward achieving Canadian permanent residency. Our team specializes in guiding international students through every stage of the immigration process. We offer expertise in addressing visa rejections, conducting judicial reviews, and, most importantly, creating tailored pathways to permanent residency.
Benefits of Studying in Canada
Studying in Canada provides unique opportunities for international students, including enhanced pathways to Canadian permanent residency. The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) under Express Entry awards higher points to applicants under 30 who hold a Canadian degree and relevant work experience.
International students may pursue permanent residency through programs such as:
The Canadian Experience Class
The Federal Skilled Worker Program
The Provincial Nominee Program
Additionally, students in Canada can work off-campus for up to 20 hours per week during their studies and full-time during school breaks. After graduation, they can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), which allows them to work in Canada for up to three years.
Working in Canada After Graduation with a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
International students who complete their studies at an eligible Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI) can apply for a PGWP. This open work permit enables graduates to:
Work in any industry and for any Canadian employer without requiring a job offer.
Gain valuable Canadian work experience, which strengthens their eligibility for permanent residency.
Use the permit to secure a job offer or obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), if needed, to enhance their application for permanent residency.
The PGWP is valid for up to three years and cannot be renewed. In cases where the permit expires before receiving an invitation to apply for permanent residency, students may transition to visitor status while they wait.
Spouses or common-law partners of PGWP holders are eligible for an open work permit valid for the same duration.
Can International Students Bring Their Family to Canada?
International students on a study permit can bring their spouse or common-law partner to Canada. The spouse or partner may apply for an open work permit or dependent study permit, valid for the duration of the student’s program.
Minor children accompanying the student can also apply for study permits, allowing them to attend school in Canada.
